There are five metal materials utilized within the roofing industry.

  2. Aluminum

  3. Copper

  4. Tin

  5. Zinc


A metal roof brings many different advantages to homeowners, from being low maintenance to having a long lifespan. When the term “metal roofing” is used, most commonly it’s referring to steel. Steel is an alloy, made from iron and other elements.

The lifespan of your metal roof will be determined by a number of factors including the style of the panel profile, gauge of the steel, and the finish.


ADVANTAGEOUS OF METAL ROOFING:

  • Metal (steel) is environmentally and economically friendly.

  • Metal roofs reflect solar heat into the atmosphere instead of absorbing it.

  • Most new metal roofs contain recycled metal content and are 100 percent recyclable at the end of service life.

  • There are more than 100 color options available for modern metal roofs.

  • Metal roofing will not rot or have problems with mildew. It also isn’t susceptible to termite or rodent infestation.

  • One of the biggest advantages of metal roofing is that it’s one of the few fire-resistant roofing materials. When installed correctly, it has the best fire rating available, Class A, making it ideal for areas that are prone to wildfires.

  • Metal roofing is the least expensive of the five metal types of roofing materials. It will cost 35% less than aluminum and ⅓ the price of copper or zinc.

  • A metal roof can last 40-60 years or more when installed correctly, bringing long term value to the residence.

  • A metal roof has strength that makes it resistant to cracking, chipping, or warping. It can survive winds up to 140 mph and can withstand impact from falling objects. 



DISADVANTAGEOUS OF METAL ROOFING:

  • The initial upfront costs for a metal roof is relatively more expensive compared to other roofing material options.

  • Metal roofs require special equipment and tools for proper installation.

  • Metal roofing will weigh more than aluminum or copper roofing. This will create more of a load on your house that causes stress on the structure.

  • Even though metal is an excellent choice and it’s long lasting, it still has a shorter lifespan than its counter parts; aluminum, copper, and zinc.

  • Metal can easily ripple (also known as oil-canning) during the installation which can create a negative aesthetic look.
